For VLOOKUP, this first argument is the value that you want to find. This argument can be a cell reference, or a fixed value such as "smith" or 21,000. The second argument is the range of cells, C2-:E7, in which to search for the value you want to find. The third argument is the column in that range of cells that contains the value that you seek.

Entering the reference. The easiest way to enter a reference to an external range is to use the "point and click" method. Begin entering the VLOOKUP function normally. Then, when entering the table_array argument, browse to the external workbook and select the range directly in the other file. Excel will construct the needed reference.

If a macro enters a function on the worksheet that refers to a cell above the function, and the cell that contains the function is in row 1, the function will return #REF! because there are no cells above row 1. Check the function to see if an argument refers to a cell or range of cells that is not valid.

Function reference links: VLOOKUP, INDEX, MATCH, and LOOKUP. Exact match = first. When doing an exact match, you'll always get the first match, period. It doesn't matter if data is sorted or not. In the screen below, the lookup value in E5 is "red". The VLOOKUP function, in exact match mode, returns the price for the first match:

You can't use VLOOKUP in this case, you need to do two different lookups to locate the value you want based on coordinates. A two-way lookup.
